Green & Healthy Frome is a partnership between Frome Medical Practice, Frome Town Council, and Edventure Frome CIC. Together, they secured £1.7 million from The National Lottery to support their mission. After a development phase from April 2021 to March 2023, they received a three-year full award (April 2023–March 2026) to expand their programme. Their mission is to engage the community in actions that benefit the planet, health, and cost of living. They do this by:
- Embedding sustainable practices into existing community and organisational systems.
- Building networks and engaging community groups, individuals, and organisations.
- Providing free resources to help households make healthy, eco-friendly choices.
- Using storytelling and evaluation to promote culture change and share learning beyond Frome.
As the project nears completion, Becky Lovegrove reflected on key achievements such as the River Vision project and CANteen, as well as lessons learned, and areas for improvement.

Biodiversity – Led by Becky Davies, Climate Change Adaptation Officer, Warwick District Council. With harm to nature and wildlife a top concern among the UK population, positive initiatives such as the Wilder Community Organising in Leamington and Sustainable Wellesbourne’s Open Gardens for Wildlife were showcased as inspiring and replicable examples of community-led biodiversity action. Delegates also heard from Rosemary Collier, Local Nature Partnership on Warwickshire’s Local Nature Recover Strategy and how parish and community projects fit the bigger picture of Warwickshire’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
Top tips:
- Parish and town councils, community facilities and sports clubs can contact the Wilder Communities Project funded by Stratford and Warwick District Councils for help to improve education grounds, community green spaces and other publicly accessible areas for nature.

Adaptation – Great Alne Parish Council presented their innovative Drain Guardians Programme – an effective example of council and community-led flood alleviation. The working group now aims to strengthen partnerships with farmers and landowners to “slow the flow” through natural flood management, combining large-scale interventions like leaky dams with practical household-level actions. Working with Warwickshire County Council and utilising the Lengthsman scheme also supports essential maintenance and provides “local eyes on the ground” for ongoing monitoring.

Claudine Pearson, Climate Officer, WALC, highlighted the urgent need to prepare for climate impacts already locked in due to historic greenhouse gas emissions. Key themes included:
- Rising global temperatures and the inevitability of continued climate change, even with immediate emissions cuts.
- Local projections for Warwickshire: warmer, wetter winters; hotter, drier summers; and more frequent extreme weather events.
- Vulnerable residents, infrastructure, and ecosystems face heightened risks from flooding, heatwaves, and storm damage.
- Practical local responses: tree planting, sustainable landscaping, cool spaces, and flood mitigation through nature-based solutions.
- Support from the District Councils, through funded initiatives like Wilder Communities, Free Trees for Farmers, and (Stratford-on-Avon’s) Community Climate and Nature Fund.
- Community-led success stories, such as Great Alne Parish Council and their Drains Guardian Programme, are key.
Thanks to expert insights from Gina Rowe, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, and Rianveer Mahal, Warwickshire County Council Flood Risk Management, delegates discussed delivering projects with and for local communities.

Energy Efficency & Retrofit – Delegates explored practical strategies to tackle fuel poverty and reduce carbon emissions within their communities. The session, led by Act-on Energy, covered key funding schemes such as the Warm Homes Local Grant and Warwickshire Household Support Fund, and offered insights into low-carbon technologies like solar panels and heat pumps. Participants engaged in discussions around historic housing challenges, energy efficiency upgrades, and how to better support vulnerable households.
