Besides being a Kenilworth town councillor, Zoe Leventhal KC is a barrister at Matrix chambers with expertise in environmental law and sits on the Bar Council Climate Crisis Working Group.  At Kenilworth All Together Greener’s (KATG) recent event, Zoe delivered a lay person’s version of a talk first aired at the Bar Council’s 21st Annual Law Reform Lecture:  Reimagining law for the Earth.

In her talk, she considered: “Should nature have legal rights like humans do? Could this be the key to reversing nature’s decline? Could it bring the systemic change needed to counter the climate and biodiversity emergencies?”  She summarised our laws on protecting and restoring nature, shared international examples from Ecuador and the South Pacific, and asked what more is needed? Zoe mentioned two books:  The Overstory by Richard Powers; and UK Earth Law Judgements – Reimagining Law for People and Planet.

You can view the recording of Zoe’s original talk at the Bar Council’s Annual Law Reform Lecture. Reimagining law for the Earth explores the rapidly evolving field of Earth law and the opportunities and challenges it presents for law reform and legal decision making. View the recording

The next KATG event is on Wednesday 9 October when Louise Bowlt will be recounting her experience of making energy improvements to her own home and this led to a new career with the advice charity Act-on Energy.
