The Local Government Association (LGA) released a statement covering the response from local authorities and civil society on the LGA’s consultation on whether councils should have a climate statutory duty.
“The consultation on the introduction of new statutory duties on local authorities with regards climate change has closed. The Local Government Association received 308 individual responses, including 150 from local authorities.
The consultation reveals a clear consensus, that: local authorities need statutory duties and powers, sufficient funding, and robust support to lead on climate action. Over the coming months officers will undertake further analysis on the findings and begin to set out our next steps for developing detailed, evidenced and costed proposals for moving forward.”

“The report published by the LGA and developed by Local Partnerships sets out advice on how to build collaboration between the UK Government and councils to deliver on the shared ambition for responding to climate change. The report was created in consultation with chief executives and senior officers from 30 local and combined authorities, with further input from sector organisations such as ADEPT. It draws on Local Partnerships’ extensive practical experience supporting councils across the UK on net zero delivery, climate adaptation, and initiatives such as Ynni Cymru, the Welsh national energy company.”
