Growing challenges such as waterlogged pitches and rising maintenance costs are making facilities harder to use and sustain. Recent research published by Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) assesses how climate change is affecting grassroots sport in the UK, both environmentally and financially. The project also explored ways to reduce the environmental impact of grassroots sport and identified adaptations to support the sector’s long-term environmental and financial sustainability. In particular, the report states that the prospect of declining participation is likely to have a “significant impact on the health and wellbeing of the population”, which could lead to an even greater burden on the public health costs.
