Shrewley

WDC Report- The three newly elected District Councillors are Cllr George Illingworth (Chair of WDC), Cllr Richard Hales (Portfolio holder for Finance)  and Cllr John Cooke (Portfolio holder for Planning).  Cllr George Illingworth has represented Abbey Ward on the District Council for 12 years.  At the first meeting of the new Full Council, Councillors unanimously agreed to declare a ‘climate emergency’.

Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Lowlands Equestrian Centre – The Princess Royal officially opened the first National Training Centre for the Riding for the Disabled Association in Shrewley on 12th June. Her Royal Highness Princess Anne is President of the RDA and a patron of the centre which will bring together, train and inspire the charity’s volunteers and coaches from almost 500 RDA centres across the UK. The opening event, sponsored by Childs Farm, coincided with the 50th anniversary of the charity, which is dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through horse riding and carriage driving.

Neighbourhood Watch – Residents are warned that burglaries in the parish are on the increase.  Please ensure you have adequate security in place. Low cost alarms are a good deterrent.

Highway and Public Footpath/Towpath Maintenance and Repair – The slurry seal on both sides of Shrewley Common pavement has been completed resulting in an improved, more even surface.

The vehicle activated sign outside Barn Close Nurseries on the Hockley Rd was demolished in a recent accident. The PC is consulting with WCC Highways to get a new sign installed as soon as possible.

Warwickshire Rights of Way has an online Fault Report System http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/rowreporting. A list of reported public footpath faults in Shrewley Parish can be viewed on www.shrewley.org. from the Parish Council page.

There is also a link to reported Highway problems - enter your postcode for local reported problems.

Shrewley Common Traffic Calming: Residents’ Survey – In response to concerns from residents about speeding traffic, the Parish Council has made an application to the PCC’s new road safety fund.  Councillors would welcome residents’ proposals on possible solutions.

Shrewley Bus Shelter – Parish Councillors will be carrying out repairs to the bus shelter roof in the near future..

Friends of Hatton Station – Further work is to be carried out on Hatton Station road bridge DCL 167.  The brickwork is being repaired and repainting continued.  Vegetation is to be removed and renewed wire fencing erected to the south of the bridge.  There will be a temporary road closure from 8th July which it is anticipated will last until 30th July.

Canal & River Trust- Around 80% of the plastic in our oceans comes from litter dropped inland. Research shows that 1,562 items of plastic (bottles, food wrappers, bags etc.) leave one of our canals or rivers and head to the sea every single day. That’s more than 500,000 items each year.  All that litter and plastic also damages the wildlife that live in and around our waterways and hedgerows. Much of it laying unseen under the surface of the water.

Pick it up - if everyone who visits one of our canals or rivers picked up just one piece of plastic, the waterways would be clear within a year!

Shrewley Parish Council is looking to get people involved in improving a stretch of the canal.  It’s a way to put something back and the wildlife that live there will love you for it.  Further details will be in the September Newsletter.
