NALC's August 2019 Council Spotlight goes to Fillongley Parish Council

Council Spotlight will recognise your council, communities and individuals as well as partners that have championed the great work in the local council sector. From innovative ideas to lobbying for funding, from grassroots projects to getting more control from district councils.

Fillongley Parish Council in Warwickshire is a busy and enthusiastic council representing a small population of 1,204 with a precept of £18,190.

Historically the parish has a strong farming identity though this is slowly changing with farms consolidating land and new people moving into the village who have no farming connection but enjoy rural living. There is a strong sense of community which the council is keen to maintain and promote.

This year, the council has provided a wealth of recent projects, some of which will be replicated in other parishes, such as a Community Speedwatch scheme, a Parish Lengthsman to improve the local area, and numerous commemorations for the Centenary of the end of WW1 (including a new memorial bench, War Memorial restoration, "Tommy – There but not there” sculpture, and participation in the lone piper and then the chain of Beacons across the UK with approximately 600 people attending the commemorations.

Two other projects less common are the Fillongley Parish Community Award and Silver Sunday. Firstly, the Fillongley Parish Community Award gives recognition to those who have helped out as unsung heroes. Previous recipients have done things such as promoting the regeneration of the village hall to washing the football club kits! Secondly, Silver Sunday is a national day that celebrates the elderly. All residents over 60 are invited to a free afternoon of entertainment and dinner. This year was a poetry recital and performance by City of Coventry Male Voice Choir followed by a ploughman’s dinner, and plenty of tea and biscuits throughout.
