Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is not only the right thing to do, it's good for your community. This interactive workshop will explore EDI as it applies to local councils and councillors, including unconscious bias and how that impacts perceptions and decisions not just around employment but representation, services and engagement.

Learning Outcomes

Gain an understanding of how equality, diversity and inclusion fits into the local Council framework regarding:

  • Meaning and benefits of equality, diversity and inclusion on councillor representation and community engagement and service provision
  • Legal framework (of employment policies and procedures as well as standing orders)
  • Protected characteristics
  • Types of discrimination
  • Recognise and explore what unconscious bias is, its impact and how to manage it
Explore inappropriate language and behaviour that might arise in various local Council settings:
  • Meetings
  • Employment
  • Public engagement
  • Recruitment of new Councillors
Understand how to challenge entrenched behaviour and find new ways of working.

Help with Delegate’s Fees WALC will subsidise member councils

  • Members with a budgeted income up to £15,000 will get half price for all delegates
  • Members with a budgeted income between £15,001 & £30,000 can send two for the price of one
  • Members with a budgeted income between £30,001 & £50,000 can send three for the price of two
  • Members with a budgeted income over £50,000 can send five for the price of four

must be received in writing 5 days before the event for a full refund of the fee. Substitute delegate(s) may be named at any time up to the event.
