Suitable for:

Individuals and teams working in the voluntary and community sector including managers, volunteers, trustees and support staff.


To ensure that safeguarding and safe practice is understood and embedded within voluntary and community sector organisations and groups.


Attendees will be able to demonstrate awareness of:

  • what safeguarding means
  • the scope and context of safeguarding concerns
  • how to act appropriately and effectively to resolve safeguarding issues

The session will be led by Emma Wells and Alison Orr

Emma Wells manages a local volunteer led Criminal Justice charity, delivering projects to reduce reoffending including volunteer mentoring for ex-offenders and their families and a community café.  She regularly leads collaborative work in the sector and sits on the voluntary sector advisory group to the Ministry of Justice. She was previously employed at WCC training and co-ordinating multi-agency practitioners to provide early help to families, including writing and delivering a variety of professional development training packages.  She has also worked as a primary school teacher and adult literacy /ESOL teacher.  Emma has a Masters in Childhood and Youth- Specialising in Children’s Rights, Safeguarding and Equality and Diversity; she is an experienced educator and trainer, able to engage a variety of audiences. She also volunteers as a School Governor and an ESOL tutor.

Alison Orr works for Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Action as the county wide Training Manager.  She is based at the Rugby Office where she is also the Locality Manager, as well as leading on the ConnectWELL Social Prescribing Programme. She is also a trained Belbin practitioner.  Alison has experience of running her own market garden business in Rugby and has spent the majority of her career working in the voluntary sector as Fundraising Officer with the Spinal Injuries Association and later as Regeneration Officer and Local Enterprise Growth Initiative Project Manager in Coventry.  Alison has lived in Dunchurch for the last 30 years where she also served on the Parish Council for a year.

Attendance at this event will accrue 1.5 CPD point

This free event is open to delegates from the WALC area.  You do not need to be in membership or even a councillor to attend, however you do need your local council to endorse your registration.
