Planning Nuts and Bolts

An introductory training session for Parish/Town Councillors and Clerks covering the basic principles of planning including policy, applications, appeals and enforcement. This two hour session will also include tips on increasing the effectiveness of the responses that Parish and Town Councils send through to local planning authorities and the opportunity to ask questions of an experienced planning consultant who has worked for local Councils, a volume house builder and a planning consultancy.

Aims of the session

  • To provide an introduction to the basics of planning policy, applications, appeals and enforcement
  • To explain the role of technical consultees in planning matters
  • To increase your effectiveness in dealing with planning issues affecting your Parish
  • To increase your understanding of what constitutes a ‘material planning consideration’ in the determination of an application or appeal

Record of attendance at training events is required when applying for the Local Council Awards Scheme


£35.00 per delegate for Member Councils

Non-member fee £70.00

Help with Delegate’s Fees

WALC will subsidise member councils

  • Members with a budgeted income up to £15,000 will get half price for all delegates
  • Members with a budgeted income between £15,001 & £30,000 can send two for the price of one
  • Members with a budgeted income between £30,001 & £50,000 can send three for the price of two
  • Members with a budgeted income over £50,000 can send five for the price of four

Unfortunately the website cannot currently handle the free places, so if you qualify please email and we will amend any relevant invoices.



Any delegate cancellations

must be received in writing 5 days before the event for a full refund of the fee. Substitute delegate(s) may be named at any time up to the event.
